Sunday

Sunday is the worst day of the week. The work that was meant to be done all weekend has finally caught up and there you are spending a day at your computer. Sunday is so bad it can even taint Saturday. I can't count how many times i didn't want to go to sleep on Saturday so I wouldn't have to wake up on Sunday. Today is one of those days. It's Monday, but U of M students have Monday and Tuesday off this week, making Tuesday the representative of the Sunday atmosphere. Friday is the only real freedom available. So make sure you live on your Fridays.

School

University is exhausting. So much time is spent working and it wears on you. I'm ready for it to be over. My college career has been for the most part enjoyable but I'm ready to move on.... but I have at least 1.5 more years to go. Wow

Why?

Why? is a question and a band. Today I saw the band down at the blind pig, which by the way I am convinced is the best venue in the business. A great show as I would have imagined, their music lends itself well to live shows. I was a little bit disappointed they didn't play the excellent "Fatalist Palmistry." They did, however, play the excellent "The Hollows." This is a song that builds the whole way up to a overwhelming climax. I was somewhat disappointed they didn't oversell the chorus at the show. It seemed like a great time to get the whole crowd banging their head but they opted to make the instrumentation a little lighter than I wanted right when I wanted to get really into it. But then he hit that climax and belted out how he wasn't going to mess with any gypsies and the crowd loved it.

Song Writing

Song writing is tough. So many things have been done before that it's hard to write something and not think immediately "Oh this is already a Beatles/Rolling Stones/Cat Stevens/etc. song." Sometimes I feel I may never write anything that could be completely original chords wise. There's only so many patterns that sound good and I feel lucky when I find one that works for me. But it kills to realize it may only sound right because you've heard it before. They say hit songs are the ones that sound like everything else you've already heard, they're more accessible that way.

I wrote some decent lyrics today but I won't post them right now. Blogs with lyrics bother me, even if they're my own. The problem writing lyrics still liking them the next day. Sometimes I'll write something and like it but then the next day I'll realize it's bad and delete the whole thing. I only get to do so much song writing, So I want the ones that get to the recording stage to be perfect. Even if it takes me months to finish them.
